When a man was attacked by a shark, he thought his time was up, but little did he know that the terrifying ordeal would actually save his life.
Eugene Finney was swimming off the California coast when a shark smashed into him, leaving him in severe pain, with a huge gash across his back, as well as plenty of cuts and bruises.
Speaking to CBS Boston, he said:
Something struck me from behind. I’d never been hit like that before. It was pretty jarring. It kind of gave me instant whiplash.
However, it soon became apparent that surviving the attack wasn’t the only lucky escape Eugene had made.
When he went to hospital to get checked out, doctors discovered a cancerous tumour in his kidneys. And, because they’d caught it early, doctors were able to remove it and Eugene is not even expected to need radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
A relieved Eugene now credits the shark with saving his life.
He added:
If this didn’t happen with the shark, causing me to go in with this chest pain, I would have never known about this cancer. The shark was a real message to me. I really feel like I’ve gotten a second chance at life and I’m not going to blow it!
Those friendly neighbourhood sharks – they’re not as bad as they seem, you know!
