28-year-old Sarwan Singh was driving past an irrigation canal in India’s Punjab region when he saw a crowd of people, reports The Independent.
It was then he spotted the helpless animal, but when nobody else took action to save the dog, Sarwan sprang into action and improvised with his turban.

Sarwan is reported as saying:
I stopped my car and went over to check what was happening. I was shocked to see that there was a dog drowning but no-one was actually helping.
The moment I started taking off my turban, people watching around were shocked. They thought I was disrespecting my faith, but what was important at that point was to save the animal’s life.
Sarwan added:
The dog wasn’t comfortable. He was not coming to me at all. We had to follow him for around 200 metres before I was able to wrap my turban around his neck and pull him to safety.
He was frightened, so I fed him some biscuits and let him go on his own.
The turban – or Sikh dastaar, as it’s known – is worn out of love and obedience to the wishes of the founders of the faith, hence the initial shock that Sarwan removed his without hesitation.
But, given the selflessness of his actions, surely he will not be condemned by religious leaders.
What an absolute hero!
