I don’t know if it’s just me, but whenever I take my pup to the park – he’s a big German shepherd by the way – it’s always the little dogs who seem to give it the big one, while the larger dogs just sit there, totally uninterested.
Pugs, Shih Tzus, Chihuahuas – you name it, the little scrappy pups are always the ones who can be heard before they’re seen, barking at the leg of some giant canine like a Great Dane or Rottweiler.
I know there’s ‘small dog syndrome’ which, according to Purina, is the name given to a collection of behaviours displayed by small dogs, behaviours that have the effect of overcoming any deficits caused by being small in stature, but still, it always makes me chuckle.

So this brings me onto the tale of one little Dachshund, who proves my above point perfectly, when she tried to take on a herd of deer, all by herself.
Little sausage dog Lana, who lives with her humans Tom, 24, and his sister Molly, 22, in Brixton, London, went after the mammals while out on a walk in the idyllic Richmond Park.
Lucky for us, and the rest of the internet, Molly caught it all on camera and posted it on Lana’s Instagram account, with the cheeky caption, ‘I fancied myself some deer for lunch’.

Seems familiar, doesn’t it?
That’s because you may remember the viral video of Fenton the Labrador.
Fenton charged at the same herd of deer in 2011, and the whole glorious incident was also captured on camera:
Anyway, back to Lana… the speedy little sausage looks completely unfazed by the giant herd, running towards them with a level of confidence most of us could only wish for.
Her little legs took her a good distance in a short amount of time, and even caused the deer to start moving on their way.
However, there was one statuesque-deer who came face-to-face with little 11-month-old Lana, and the pair embarked on a stare-off of sorts.
This obviously confused or excited Lana, as she then proceeded to bound about in circles, before Tom runs over towards her.
It’s at this point the deer, along with the rest of the herd decide to make a run for it. Lana, for a split second, does try to go after them, but soon realises she’s out of her depth and returns towards the direction of the camera.
So small, but oh so much personality:
Speaking to UNILAD, Tom said:
She’s normally very good with commands and recalls. She had a puppy trainer when she was little and is generally very well behaved.
I work in Battersea and she comes to work with me, so she gets a walk in Battersea Park everyday. I always let her off the lead in the park and there’s never been any issues.
Because she’s so small she can be shy and scared of the bigger dogs, hence why I never thought she’d go chasing after deer.
We took her for a big day out in Richmond Park and we’d walked past deer on several occasions, at first with her lead on and also without.
She didn’t show them any attention and was very unfazed. It wasn’t until we were leaving that she decided to do her best Fenton impersonation.
