Theunis Botha enjoyed nothing more than heading into the wild with a big old gun and shooting animals to death.

On Friday he did the above as he had done hundreds, if not thousands of times before, but on this occasion he would not be coming home – and out of bizarre circumstances.

So the story goes that 51-year-old Theunis went out on a hunt to Gwai, in Zimbabwe. As they were out – shooting and what not – the group came across a breeding herd of elephants and they began to shoot at them, according to News24.

The elephants began running at the group of hunters and one of them, allegedly, picked up Theunis with its trunk.

One member of the group Theunis was with shot the elephant that had ahold of him but the wounded and dying elephant fell on top of Theunis and he was agonizingly crushed to death.

His wife is expected to travel out to Zimbabwe in the next few days to identify her husband’s body before bringing it back to his native South Africa.

It’s interesting when the hunters become the hunted.
