Duchess, a bull terrier, was shot three times by the officer after he knocked on the family’s door to let them know their car door was open.

However, things took a turn when the dog’s owner, Gillian Palacios, opened the door and Duchess ran out to say hello before being shot at point blank range.

Surveillance footage also backs up the family’s claim that Duchess wasn’t being aggressive, or barking, at the time she was killed.

Photos taken after the incident show just how visibly distraught the family were at the loss of their beloved pup.

Speaking about the incident, Gillian Palacios said: “Before I could even do anything, the officer had his gun out and shot her three times in the head.”

She continued: “She was curious. She wasn’t barking and she wasn’t growling. There was no reason for him to think she was aggressive in any way.”

The unidentified police officer, who has since been put on administrative leave, claimed that Duchess was ‘charging at him’ at the time of the shooting. He then told the family that Animal Services would come around to collect her.
