Horrifying footage taken by a photographer in Mexico shows the moment a four-metre-long Great White Shark breaks into a shark-proof cage holding a tourist diver.
The notorious predator was chasing a piece of tuna bait when it’s momentum allowed it to enter the apparatus where the tourist was trapped, the Mirror reports.
Onlookers panic and the diving staff desperately open the cage and try to save the man submerged in the cage with the Great White.
The Shark thrashes around in the cage and finally jumps out of the top and escapes into the sea, leaving everyone worries for the safety of the diver.
Miraculously the diver emerges unscathed but understandably shaken, and the crowd cheers in relief.
Buck Forester, who took the video, said:
Great white sharks are awesome and what appears to be an ‘attack’ on a diving cage is not.
They are temporarily blinded when they open their mouths, so when the shark went for the tuna bait on the rope it accidentally slammed into the cage.
They can’t swim backwards so it thrust forward through the cage with a diver inside.
Rest assured, no one was injured and after a dramatic half minute, the diver emerged safely.
Shark diving as been widely controversial as a tourist attraction with claims that baiting can lead to an increase in attacks.
I just couldn’t trust a cage after seeing this!
