The pooch spent his last day at the beach where he was able to ‘frolic in the surf’ and eat at an In & Out Burger, which sounds like a fantastic way to do it.

Taking to Instagram, his owners shared the heartbreaking news, writing:

My precious Stewart crossed the rainbow bridge today.

We went to the beach (his favourite place) where he frolicked in the surf and then enjoyed a picnic lunch of In & Out burgers. We relaxed in the sun and just enjoyed each other’s company.

Our veterinarian met us there later and Stewart went to sleep peacefully in my arms while listening to the sounds of the ocean.

He was a one in a million kind of dog, he was my supaah staah.

Stewart had an important role on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, having had entire episodes based around his adventures, like when Jake and Amy accidentally lost him. He was also crucial to the incredible Halloween heist episodes.

In fact, someone has already gone to the lengths of preparing a memorial reel for the pooch, and I’m not going to lie, it’s a real tear-jerker.

Tributes have started pouring in on social media for the four-legged friend, proving just how loved he is, not just by his family, but by fans of the show far and wide.

‘The dog who played Cheddar on B99 passed away and I am SAD,’ one fan tweeted, ‘RIP Stewart you’re the goodest boi.’

Another wrote: ‘Rest In Peace Cheddar, B99 won’t be the same without you,’ while a third asked: ‘Cheddar from B99 just passed away. Why is the world so cruel?’

It’s unknown whether the series will address the death of Captain Holt’s pooch, but one thing we do know it, you’re no common bitch, Cheddar.

Rest in peace dear Stewart.
