A woman who gave water to pigs that were in transit to a Toronto slaughterhouse could face up to ten years in prison.
Anita Krajnc was confronted by the driver of a lorry transporting the animals as she poured water through breathing holes.
After she is recorded saying ‘If they are thirsty, give them water’ the driver responds by threatening to call the police.
He also says ‘You know what? These are not humans, you dumb frickin’ broad.’
Following the incident Anita was charged with criminal mischief, and could now face serve serious prison time if found guilty.
Anita is the co-founder of Toronto Pig Save, an animal rights, vegan activist group who say they want to build slaughterhouses with glass walls so that more people opt for a vegan lifestyle.
She argues that the group is helping desperate animals when they are dehydrated, and also accuses Canada of having the ‘most lax regulations in the western world’ when it comes to the welfare of livestock.
After she was charged Anita said:
Offering water to a thirsty pig is an act of compassion.
It is not only a right, but a duty we all share. Causing the pigs to suffer in the first place is what is wrong.
I face these criminal charges with dignity, knowing that truth and justice are on my side.”
The pigs certainly do appear in some degree of distress in the video, and the enthusiasm they show for the water only serves to prove they needed it.
