Greatest Showman and High School Musical star Zac Efron has proven he has a heart of gold, after adopting a dog which was due to be put down.

Just when you thought Efron couldn’t get any more lovable, he’s become a doggy daddy, introducing his new beautiful fur baby on Instagram.

Posting an adorable picture of himself and MACA on the social media site, Efron wrote:

Hey planet, this is MACA. #adoptdontshop

We clearly aren’t the only ones in love with this photo as, at the time of writing, April 5, it’s received nearly two million likes from supportive fans.

Which is no surprise really as not only did Efron adopt an unwanted dog, but MACA, who was previously called Tilly, was recently scheduled to be put down before the actor stepped in and saved her.

Reposting Efron’s photo, Los Angeles based humane pet shop Bark ‘n’ Bitches Dog Boutique shared her story.

Posting to Instagram, the boutique wrote:

Tilly, now MACA, was being led to the kill room when we stepped in and said we would take her.

She was turned around and brought to us! This guy named Zac Efron came in (we hear he is an actor but we think he actually waits tables) came in and fell in love.

He went through our application process and fostered MACA and just could not give her back. So MACA now lives with Zac! This is her happily ever after! Happy life MACA! Happy life.

I’m not crying, you are!

Efron is just one of a growing number of celebrities who are choosing to adopt pets, often sharing the popular hashtag #adoptdontshop on their social media accounts.

For instance, Mamma Mia star Amanda Seyfried regularly posts photos of herself and loyal pup, Finn, who’s never far away from her side.

Speaking to People about her beloved best friend, Amanda has no regrets about adopting Finn saying:

Finn has made me more present. He’s always so sensitive and in-the-moment — it’s all he has. He feels deeply.

I love just randomly going upstairs and falling asleep next to him. It’s my favourite thing in the world.

She continued:

People think that behaviourally, it won’t be easy to train them, or that they’re emotionally unstable, but that can be true for any animal.

People also say, ‘but I want a puppy!’. You can still rescue puppies. And there’s nothing wrong with an adult dog, either — often you don’t even have to train them.

It’s so worth it in the grand scheme. You have this incredible connection to this beautiful bundle of love. There’s nothing like it.

The love between between the two is clearly visible – you only have to glance at Seyfried’s Instagram account to see photos guaranteed to make you go ‘awwwww’.

Finn even has his own dedicated Instagram page where you can follow his journey.
