WWE stars John Cena and Nikki Bella have called time on their relationship, calling off their engagement and splitting up.
The news will come as a shock to wrestling fans, particularly as the pair only got engaged last year – nearly to the day – inside the ring during a special moment at WrestleMania 33.
The engagement came after the pair had beaten The Miz and Maryse in a tag team match infront of 65,000 fans at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium.
According to TMZ, the former couple said:
While this decision was a difficult one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another.
We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives.
Earlier on Sunday April 15, Cena tweeted out a quote from Walt Whitman which read:
Keep your faith always toward the sunshine — and shadows will fall behind you.
The fan favourite said the quote was for anyone who’s feeling down.
Fans believe Cena may have given a hint of the pair’s trouble just last month, telling Us Weekly:
It takes being able to mesh two lives. I would never ever want Nicole to be in a position where she says ‘I’m holding you back from doing this because I feel it’s wrong for us.’ And I would never say that to her.
That’s why she’s super busy and sometimes we don’t see each other for months at a time, but when we do see each other, it’s our time together.
The ‘You Can’t See Me’ star had previously asked the former Total Divas athlete to marry him, but revealed he wanted to make it official on the ‘grandest stage of all’: WrestleMania.
He revealed:
I said, ‘Do you know, one day I’m gonna marry you?’ You said, ‘Yes’. I just need you to say yes one more time.
The couple had spent around 5 years together before their engagement and reasons for the split are still unknown…Though I’m guessing it won’t take long before the gossip pages are full of rumours.
It was recently revealed how professional wrestler-turned-actor Cena, has made over 500 wishes come true for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
He’s said to now hold the title for the most wishes granted by a single person, proving the star has a mammoth heart to match his physique.
First becoming involved with the organisation in 2004, Cena’s involvement only grew and in 2012, granted his 300th wish. this was followed by his 400th in 2014 and his 500th in 2015.

The WWE star appeared on the Today show to grant his 500th wish, surprising eight-year-old Rocco Lanzer, who’s battling leukaemia.
The wrestling fan couldn’t have be more excited when Cena presented him with ringside tickets to WWE’s SummerSlam, gifts and an invite to a special party.
His mouth agape in shock, Rocco’s mother Maria had to encourage her son to give Cena a high five as he was overwhelmed with excitement at meeting his hero.
As a fan of the pair, not only am I shocked, but I’m pretty gutted to see these two go their separate ways!
All the best to Nikki and John for the future!
