Everyone’s favourite actor-turned-activist has just donated a seven-figure sum to the Hurricane Harvey relief fund.
As other famous names begin a pissing contest on social media to see who can write the bigger cheque, Leonardo DiCaprio has ever so quietly donated $1,000,000 to the United Way Harvey Recovery Fund.
Leo’s foundation gave the money to the fund under the promise his hard-earned cash will be used for both short and long-term relief.
United Way says the entire amount will go to help victims of the epic storm, reports TMZ.
It marks the first donation to this newly established fund, as other celebrities including Sandra Bullock, Dwayne Johnson, and the Kardashian family, have chosen to give their charity to the Red Cross Harvey Fund.
Leo is a staunch environmental campaigner, who was involved in the Paris Accord.
Whatever you think of public celebrity donations, probably puppeteered by clever PR personnel, undenibaly, the money is sorely needed.
At least 31 people are now confirmed to have died as a result of the category four hurricane, which has since been downgraded to a Tropical Depression.
Authorities say eight more deaths are being investigated.
Moreover, 50,000 residents are believed to have lost their homes, with one analysis suggesting the cost to property could be $24 billion.
Our thoughts are with those affected. If you want to donate to the relief efforts, visit the donations page at the Red Cross and Salvation Army.
