Just when you thought designers had done all they could do with denim…

Introducing the asymmetric jean, the forefront of fashion according to the price tag, which does the job of all your favourite denim styles, all at once under the same waistline, bizarrely.

Prepare to see these knocking around on Instagram.

We’ve already seen ripped to smithereens which cost £122 from CARMAR Denim, jeans with actual mud smeared all over them, and the ever-ugly upside-down jeans of 2018, as well as crotchless trousers from the ever-original ASOS.

The jeans are the brainchild of Ksenia Schnaider, a fashion house specialising in denim design. The concept is simple… Relatively.

So, Schnaider decided to solve the dilemma plaguing fashion followers every morning: Whether to don a pair of denim flairs a la your mum at Woodstock, or to opt for a slim pair of jeans straight out of Alexa Chung’s early noughties playbook.

It’s a tricky choice, I know.

Mom jeans have been fulfilling the halfway house needed when you need more room to breath than skinnies offer and don’t have the tolerance to cope with the swish of your flairs all day for decades.

But apparently Schnaider thought there was a niche in denim to construct a kind of 2-in-1 deal.

Thus, the asymmetric jeans was born – and the name isn’t a simple reference to a jaunty hem. Nope, the style sees one trouser leg take up the mantle for flairs and the other offer straight a say.

In my humble opinion, this would’ve been the perfect opportunity for a lovely fashion portmanteau; like slairs or flaight jeans. Alas…

The Ukrainian-designed jeans have been styled in a now viral Instagram post by costume designer, Sonya Soltes, with a plain white hoody which reads ‘typing’.

I’m not sure what she’s trying to say with the outfit, but it’s definitely different – and that’s half the battle with the inimitable art of fashion and style, right.

The design isn’t completely unwarranted. Schnaider was inspired by the 50/50 trend which clogged up catwalks last year and has taken it to new heights.

The designer told Dazed Digital:

So far, some people have loved the asymmetric jeans, but others have asked me if they’re some kind of joke.

I was told the idea was too crazy and that nobody needs jeans like this, so I gave up on the idea for a couple of seasons, but in the end I decided to go for it.

It’s good to get people talking, and they’re definitely going to make people turn their heads as you walk by!

Watch out for these on various influencers’ Instagram feeds.

Schnaider’s previous styles have been favoured by globally-renowned models, such as the Hadid sisters, Bella and Gigi, as well as pop star Dua Lipa.

They’re a sort of jean short or flared skort and full-length jean hybrid style, with the ever-important ripped knees now synonymous with the height of cool.

…And I’m only just getting my head around the concept of double denim being acceptable on adults again.
