International model Gigi Hadid has slammed body-shaming trolls revealing her weight is due to a medical condition.

In a series of tweets Gigi hit out at trolls who criticised her for being too skinny saying treatment she undergoes for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis affects her weight.

The model also stated she would ‘not further explain’ why her body looks a certain way calling for people to have more ’empathy for others’.

Gigi started off her posting by suggesting trolls who used to call her fat are now criticising her for losing weight.

Responding to these claims saying she has gotten thinner, Hadid opened up about Hashimoto’s thyroiditis which can lead to tiredness, dry skin and weight gain.

The condition sees your immune system attacking your thyroid, a small gland at the base of your neck, which then causes inflammation and other various side effects.

The model tweeted:

For those of you so determined to come up with why my body has changed over the years, you may not know that when I started at 17 I was not yet diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease.

Those of you who called me ‘too big for the industry’ were seeing inflammation and water retention due to that.

Over the last few years I’ve been properly medicated to help symptoms including those, as well as extreme fatigue, metabolism issues, body’s ability to retain heat, etc… I was also part of a holistic medical trial that helped my thyroid levels balance out.

Although stress and excessive travel can also affect the body, I have always eaten the same, my body just handles it differently now that my health is better.

I may be ‘too skinny’ for you, honestly this skinny isn’t what I want to be, but I feel healthier internally and I am still learning and growing with my body everyday, as everyone is.

Hadid then urged her followers and those on social media to rethink the way they behave online.

She continued:

I will not further explain the way my body looks, just as anyone, with a body type that doesn’t suit your ‘beauty’ expectation, shouldn’t have to.

Not to judge others, but drugs are not my thing, stop putting me in that box just because you don’t understand the way my body has matured.

Please, as social media users and human beings in general, learn to have more empathy for others and know that you never really know the whole story. Use your energy to lift those that you admire rather than be cruel to those you don’t.

This isn’t the first time Hadid has spoken out about her condition and body-shaming.

She famously put out a statement on Instagram back in 2015 that addressed the issue of people criticising her for the way she looked.

It partly read:

So many people are so quick to comment negative opinions this month. Yes, judgement on social media comes from people who, 99 per cent of the time, have no idea what they’re talking about, but I’m human, and I’m not going to lie, I did let the negativity get to me a little.

I came to a realisation that when one gets to this point, it’s important to rethink why you’re doing what you do. What your message is. What you have to say.

I represent a body a body image that wasn’t accepted in high-fashion before, and I’m very lucky to be supported by designers, stylists, and editors that I am: ones that know this is fashion, it’s art; it can never stay the same.

It’s 2015.

Sadly three years on it seems nothing has changed.
