Jennifer Lawrence has responded to critics who called the Red Sparrow photo-call ‘depressing’ and ’embarrassing’.
Earlier today several people took to Twitter to respond to a photo of the 27-year-old actress taken on the balcony of London’s Corinthia Hotel as part of the Red Sparrow UK press tour.
Standing next to her co-stars: Joel Edgerton, Jeremy Irons, Matthias Schoenaerts and director Francis Lawrence, Lawrence donned a plunging Versace dress while the men were wrapped up in layers and coats.
Many thought the photograph highlighted the difference between treatment of men and women in Hollywood.
Helen Lewis tweeted:
This is such a quietly depressing (and revealing) image. Not least because I’ve been outside today and it’s bloody freezing.
True equality means either Jennifer Lawrence getting a coat, or Jeremy Irons having to pose for a photo-call in assless chaps.
Meanwhile Elizabeth Pears asked:
Did the topic of a coat ever come up?
It turns out Lawrence did have a coat but decided to take it off for a photograph to show off her beautiful dress in all its splendour which she has every right to.
In a statement published to her Facebook page she responded to the controversy writing:
Wow. I don’t really know where to get started on this ‘Jennifer Lawrence wearing a revealing dress in the cold’ controversy. This is not only utterly ridiculous, I am extremely offended.
That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I’m going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf? I was outside for five minutes. I would have stood in the snow for that dress because I love fashion and that was my choice.
This is sexist, this is ridiculous, this is not feminism. Overreacting about everything someone says or does, creating controversy over silly innocuous things such as what I choose to wear or not wear, is not moving us forward.
It’s creating silly distractions from real issues. Get a grip people. Everything you see me wear is my choice. And if I want to be cold THATS MY CHOICE TOO!
Well said J-Law and you continue doing you. Also, the dress deserved to be flaunted in style and although people may say she was paid to do so, surely the internet has learned not to make assumptions?
The photo was taken as a part of the press tour for Lawrence’s upcoming action thriller Red Sparrow, which sees her take on the role of a ballerina-turned-spy.
