PAIt came as no surprise to anyone that Lady Gaga would take this year’s Met Gala theme of ‘Camp’ and elevate it to new, eye-popping levels.
However, none of us could have been prepared for the full spectacle Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was about to unleash on the red carpet.
More of a piece of performance art than a outfit reveal, this night will go down in Met Gala history as a classic Gaga moment and a fabulous throwback to her mega-campy Fame Monster days.
Knowing how to make an entrance stand out in a evening’s worth of grand entrances, Lady Gaga spent a full fifteen minutes unveiling each of her four outfits in an elaborate red carpet strip show.
The 33-year-old A Star Is Born strutted onto the red carpet like a glorious fashion peacock, dressed in a fuchsia Brandon Maxwell gown with a vast, flowing train.
Gaga’s 25-foot train was so extensive that she had to be assisted by a group of suited helpers who carried black umbrellas and appeared to quite rightly swoon at her OTT grandeur.
From the voluminous sleeves to the oversized bow, Lady Gaga absolutely schooled the rest of the attendees on how to do camp (here’s looking at you, Rami Malek). But, of course, there was far more to come.
@ladygaga/InstagramWith the flourish of a true star, Gaga unwrapped her bow and gown like a precious gift; revealing a second gorgeous dress beneath its hot pink folds.
This time she sported an elegant, asymmetrical black dress with a sassy side bustle. Keeping the paparazzi in the palm of her hand, Gaga posed and paraded with a black umbrella, spangled lashes glittering beneath the glare of the cameras.
She looked striking, with the spirit of high camp illuminating her confident stride. But – being Gaga – there were further surprises to come.
@ladygaga/InstagramGaga gave an expression of mock surprise as her suited assistants peeled away the black dress, revealed her third dress of the evening.
This long, fitted hot pink gown was pure Hollywood diva, with the look made complete with a nineties era cell phone bag by Judith Leiber.
Gaga chucked on a pair of outsized sunglasses as she pretended to speak into the retro phone bag, exuding all the fun and humour required to do camp well.
All the while, her assistant spritzed her platinum blonde bob with hairspray and held up mirrors for her to apply bright pink lipstick.
@ladygaga/InstagramBut it was perhaps the final outfit of the night which proved the fiercest and most daring, taking us back to a Gaga who would wear meat as a dress.
Gaga stripped down to her crystal bra, knickers and fishnets, finished off with possibly the most incredible pair of platform boots the Met Gala has ever seen.
