You think you know a person, and then they sprout some facial hair and their identity shifts in ways you couldn’t have imagined.
Never has this been more true than with Leonardo DiCaprio. I’ve seen this man climb inside a dead horse and pose as a Pan Am pilot – and yet he has honestly never surprised me more.
The 43-year-old Revenant actor is currently sporting a startling set of sideburns, and fans just don’t know which way to turn.
Now, these sideburns aren’t just an out there fashion statement. They are part of his transformation for Quentin Tarantino’s 1960s set Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Here we will see Leo play Rick Dalton, a struggling TV star, who lived next door to Sharon Tate, who was murdered during the notorious Manson family killing spree of 1969.
Leo’s former Wolf of Wall Street co-star Margot Robbie will play Valley of the Dolls actor Sharon while Brad Pitt will play Rick’s stunt double Cliff Booth.
The IMDb synopsis explains:
A faded TV actor and his stunt double embark on an odyssey to make a name for themselves in the film industry during the Helter Skelter reign of terror in 1969 Los Angeles.

Now a photograph has emerged of Leo grabbing a cheeky lunch on set, and fans are doing a triple take.
Clutching what appears to be a sandwich in one hand, the Academy Award winner is clad in simple blue jeans and a white tee.
His hair is thicker and darker than we have previously seen, with a retro, chunky fringe. But what is most surprising is the huge sideburns which transform inarguably one of the most famous faces on the planet.
Take a gander at this:
Fans cannot get over the seismic changes in the environmentalist/Hollywood prince. And many just can’t cope with the striking resemblance to Jack Black.
One person guffawed:
At a brief glance I thought that was Jack Black!
Another gasped:
I totally thought this was jack black at first glance!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tarantino has given the following description of the eagerly awaited mystery crime drama:
[It is] a story that takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood.
The two lead characters are Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), former star of a Western TV series, and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt).
Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor… Sharon Tate.
He later stated:
I’ve been working on this script for five years, as well as living in Los Angeles County most of my life, including in 1969, when I was seven years old.
I’m very excited to tell this story of an L.A. and a Hollywood that don’t exist anymore. And I couldn’t be happier about the dynamic teaming of DiCaprio & Pitt as Rick & Cliff.
However, you will sadly still have to wait a while to see Leo’s vintage sideburns in action. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood hits UK cinemas on July 26, 2019.
