Melissa McCarthy has been praised for making the most practical sartorial decision of the awards season 2019 at the 91st Oscars ceremony after party hosted by Vanity Fair.

Last year we saw fashion used as a political statement on the red carpet. This year, award season has been more about celebrating the joy of film and watching Americans fall in love with Olivia Colman.

But McCarthy – who was nominated for Best Actress for her performance in Can You Ever Forgive Me? – and her husband Ben Falcone took up the mantle of fun and games with more gusto than anyone else in the wardrobe department.

The comedian-turned-thespian may not have won her first shot at the gong, but she certainly is in the running for Best Couples’ Outfit and Best Interpretation of Ridiculous Red Carpet Standards.

The professional life partners – who have two children and appeared alongside each other in What To Expect When You’re Expecting and Bridesmaids – rocked up to the after party wearing matching black adidas tracksuits, briefly stopping to chat to some reporters on the red carpet.

McCarthy joked to Entertainment Tonight:

It’s not [less glamorous] to me, guys. I’ve doubled my diamonds – I feel great.

People are now saying they ‘redefined couple goals’:

To be honest, couple goals – ridiculous phrase – aside, they just looked super happy to be so comfy during an otherwise pretty uncomfortable red carpet experience with lots of photographers yelling at you to smile while you, presumably, spend the whole time hoping you haven’t got sweat patches from the nerves or spinach in your teeth because you haven’t eaten any beige foods for a couple of days.

Either way, McCarthy said being at the Oscars was ‘like floating in a little cloud’.

Unsurprisnlgy, the Oscars newcomer had a refreshing attitude to proceedings for the break of the day.

Along with smuggling in ‘adult drinks’ and snacks into the ceremony, she even started her day right with eggs cooked by her Can You Ever Forgive Me? co-star and nominee, Richard E. Grant, who spent the morning trampolining at her house.

Refusing to be dictated by fashion fascism during the ceremony, McCarthy – who presented the award for Best Costume with Brian Tyree Henry – donned a collection of items for her impressive outfit.

She wore the collar and wig from Mary Queen of Scots; the hat, shawl, and gloves from Mary Poppins Returns; the gown and the rabbits from The Favourite; the boots from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs; and Henry donned the makeup from Black Panther.

Who needs an Oscar when you’ve got these wavy garms and the freedom of movement to dance the night away, anyway?
