If you saw Bliss Theodora on the street, her trademark electric blue hair and edgy appearance would probably catch your attention.
Standing out from the crowd, there’s something about Bliss which draws you in, a quality suited to her specific career choice.
This is because Bliss doesn’t have a normal nine-to-five job like the majority of us. Instead, she’s one of London’s leading dominatrixes.
Moving to the UK two years ago from Melbourne, Australia, Bliss soon began her career as a dominatrix and now, as Mistress Bliss, she charges £200 an hour to fulfil clients’ fantasies.
As a dominatrix, Bliss gets paid to engage in BDSM (bondage, domination, sadism, masochism) by clients, whether it be in person, online or through letters.
The 31-year-old has not lifted the lid on her enigmatic career.
Over a career which has so far lasted 10 years, Bliss has had on an array of jobs, which have included; strip clubs, escorting, web-cam work and pornography.
For her, becoming a dominatrix was just a natural progression, explaining to UNILAD:
When I moved to the UK I was in a transitional space in my career where I wanted to create a business.
I looked at my life and the passion I always had for sexuality, sex work, psychology and human interaction and it made sense for me.
It’s not about the money as I’ve always made my own money and can make money in various ways.
I do what I love and I live who I am and always have been.
Every day is different for Mistress Bliss as she admits there’s no such thing as ‘normal’ in her line of work.
The list of services she offers is endless, tailoring each session to what the client desires.
Bliss explained to UNILAD:
I have so many varied interests such as erotic domination, corporal punishment, sensory play, strap on, fisting, puppy play, hard sports, water sports, foot fetish, latex, role play (teacher/student, infantilism, etc), bondage, shibari, and so much more!
Each client has their own backstory which is what makes them so special and unique.
That being said, my clients are all met with a friendly reception, a brief chat to clarify boundaries, hard limits, etc. (for both of us) and safe words are agreed upon.
The use of safe words is one of the rules Mistress Bliss has when it comes to her sessions.
If her clients do not have a safe word of their own, Bliss uses what is known as the traffic light system with green meaning ‘yes’, yellow signals ‘slow’ or ‘gentle’ and ‘red’ means ‘no’ and ‘stop immediately’.
Hygiene and respect is also of importance as Bliss wants her clients to recognise she has a personal life, a business and her health to look after.
When it comes to sexual acts, including things such as oral sex and Roman showers’, (vomiting on someone for sexual gratification), Mistress Bliss has a strict ban on her clients touching her without permission.
She also adamantly puts sex off the table too, as per her website, it states:
I do not have sex with My slaves. Ever! I am a Dominatrix – should you want a sexual service dont waste either mine or your time and consult a professional escort.
Bliss explained to UNILAD, much of the work she does with her clients – both male and female – doesn’t involve whips and chains like you might expect.
For instance, you can pay Mistress Bliss to order you to exercise doing push up after push up just like a personal trainer.
If you fancy it, you can also be a ‘domestic slave’ working in Bliss’ house doing her laundry, washing her dishes and even cooking her food!
What is known as ‘financial domination’ is one of the key services Mistress Bliss offers.
As she explains on her website, you would ‘only exist to fund [her] lifestyle’ showering her with gifts, paying her bills and buying her clothes.
Bliss claims her clients particularly enjoy this service as they like to feel connected to her:
I believe people enjoy sending gifts as it’s a way of showing devotion from a distance and supporting someone who they get pleasure from.
It makes the sender feel special, have a purpose and feel connected, even if in a small way, which I think is lovely and really special.
Although Bliss loves what she does, she admits it isn’t an easy job, especially since she has to stand up for her career choice every day.
As she explains to UNILAD, sex work is very misunderstood:
The biggest misconceptions for all sex workers is that our work is not a valid career, that we are damaged psychologically/emotionally, that we were abused as children and that we cannot have functional and successful relationships.
The most frustrating misconception for me is my job is so easy, anyone can jump into it and make lots of money with little knowledge, skill or past experience.
In fact, it took months for Bliss to establish her business which she says doesn’t affect her relationships with her family, friends and husband.
It isn’t just misconceptions Bliss has to battle, as there are complex laws she has to navigate, which she feels leaves sex workers vulnerable.
She admits this is the riskiest part of the job, telling UNILAD:
Current prostitution laws state owning and operating a brothel is a criminal act, which leaves sex workers vulnerable due to the lack of security and isolated due to a lack of community.
I cannot own or operate a dungeon in which various women can work at once because this is illegal.
However, in Germany for example, it’s perfectly legal, which dramatically reduces the possibility of assault/rape/murder/etc.
Individuals who work in my field are known to work from their homes which also heightens risk for obvious reasons.
Unfortunately these are the hurdles we face when doing this profession.
Bliss is campaigning for changes to be made to the law, which will provide sex workers with better protection.
In England, Wales and Scotland, selling and paying for sex is not illegal, but activities linked to it, such as brothel-keeping, kerb-crawling and soliciting sex in a public place, are outlawed.
Standing up for and supporting other sex workers is one of the things Bliss is most proud of, as well as running her own business.
She concluded to UNILAD:
It’s empowering because I’m my own boss, my own creative team, my own cheering squad. I make the rules, I set the limits, I create the goals and it’s on me to meet them. I can’t think of anything more empowering!
I built a life and a business that gives me agency, autonomy, creative freedom and expression, whilst also promoting and supporting sex workers, women rights, the LGBTQIA community and the Kink community.
