Ever since Nick Fury paged for help at the end of Infinity War Marvel fans have been desperate to see Captain Marvel in action.

Well, thank the Celestials because Marvel Studios have just dropped the first trailer for Captain Marvel and it looks every bit as epic as we expected.

Set in the Nineties, Captain Marvel tells the story of Carol Danvers  (Brie Larson) a US Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with an alien’s during an accident, transforming her into the titular Captain.

Using her spectacular new powers Carol takes to space and joins the elite military group, the Starforce who under the leadership of Mar-Vell (Jude Law) protect the galaxy from the threat of the shape-shifting Skrulls.

Lee Pace and Samuel L. Jackson both return to the MCU, as Ronan the Accuser (last seen battling the Guardians of the Galaxy) and the legendary, one-eyed badass, Colonel Nick Fury respectively.

Earlier this month Brie Larson and Entertainment Weekly teamed up to ‘break the Internet’ when they released several teaser images from the film giving audiences their first official glimpse of Carol’s iconic red and blues.

Entertainment Weekly kindly provided the film’s first synopsis:

The film sidesteps the traditional origin-story template, and when it begins, Carol already has her powers. She’s left her earthly life behind to join the elite military team Starforce on the Kree planet of Hala.

(Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck describe Starforce as the SEAL Team Six of space.) Its members include Carol, Korath (Djimon Hounsou, returning from Guardians of the Galaxy), and Minn-Erva (Crazy Rich Asians’ Gemma Chan).

Captain Marvel, was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gene Colan and first appeared in 1968’s Marvel Super-Heroes #13.

She began life as a supporting character of the Kree superhero Mar-Vell but got her own spin-off book, Ms. Marvel, just a few years later when her DNA was infused with Mar-Vell’s.

It happens more than you think in comics…

Anyway, the bizarre accident granted Carol a whole host of incredible superpowers including superhuman strength and endurance, flight and the ability to discharge explosive blasts of energy from her hands.

Kevin Feige has already promised that Carol will be the most powerful Avenger ever seen on the big-screen (Sorry Hulk and Thor).

He told Screenrant:

With Captain Marvel, she is as powerful a character as we’ve ever put in a movie. Her powers are off the charts, and when she’s introduced, she will be by far the strongest character we’ve ever had.

The Avengers 4 writers have admitted that they had an awful lot of fun writing a character with such an ‘unprecedented power level’ saying we’ve not seen anything like her in the MCU yet.

Christopher Marcus told Screenrant

She’s I should say, in some ways the closest to Captain America which is a weird, now rare kind of character which is sort of a person who’s right and knows they’re right and doesn’t really want to hear it when you tell them they’re wrong.

So, with all these flawed, f*cked up people and Quill who’s a mess and Tony who’s a massive ego all contorted. It’s fun to get another person with a clear vision in there and going, ‘Shut up’.

Marvel have been working on a big-screen adaptation for half a decade now, and there were plans for her to appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Thankfully Kevin Feige realised that it would be more appropriate to give Marvel’s biggest female superhero her own movie as opposed to tacking her on to an Avengers movie.

There’s no UK release date yet Captain Marvel but the U.S release is March 8 and we can probably expect it around the same time.
