Earlier this week Morrisons raised the ready meal bar releasing the hottest curry the UK’s supermarket shelves have ever seen.
The Volcanic Vindaloo officially holds the title of being the hottest curry in UK supermarkets with one of its key ingredients being the Naga Viper pepper – one of the fieriest chillies in the world.
Naturally we made one of our esteemed writers try it because journalism.
Brave Neelam, who describes herself as being a ‘bhuna kind of girl’, tried the curry which has a Scoville rating of around one million making it around 200 times hotter than Tabasco.
With a six chilli heat rating, the highest Morrisons has ever awarded a dish, the curry comes with a warning about its extreme heat as well as an age rating.
But this did not deter Neelam who is now a hero in our books although she may think herself a fool.
Going in filled with confidence, Neelam soon realised the challenge was much harder than previously thought.
You can watch Neelam’s effort here:

I’m usually a bhuna kind of girl and thought it couldn’t be that much worse.
Turns out I was very wrong and the spice started to really build up after a couple of bites.
The first piece of chicken was hot but it was okay.
It was that bite of the chilli that sent me over the edge. I felt it at the back of my throat and had to spit it out.
That was game over really, my mouth was on absolute fire.
Considering that the chilli Neelam had a bite of is so hot they have been weaponised, we think she actually did rather well despite all the sweat and tears.
The curry was created by spice experts in collaboration with Morrisons to celebrate National Curry Week which is taking place at the moment.
Morrisons’ Ready Meals Expert, Sean Gill, said:
Curry fans have been telling us that they just don’t get the fiery heat they want from ordinary ready meal curries.
So we decided to take up their challenge and create the hottest ready meal in the country – something with the extreme heat you get when you order a Vindaloo in your favourite restaurant.
They promised ‘extreme heat’ and fire in your mouth is exactly what you get!
It was recently revealed that of all the cities in the country which like a spicy curry on a Saturday night, Glasgow likes them hottest, so this introduction will be a welcome addition for all Glaswegian curry aficionados.
However, for the rest of us it may be something to avoid unless you feel like you are up for a challenge.
Although Neelam will probably regret her decision later, she is glad that she put herself through the pain.
She said:
At least now I know I can’t handle it.
I’ll stick to the bhuna from now on.
Costing £1.50, you can pick up a ‘Volcanic Vindaloo’ from Morrisons stores across the country if you dare.
Just make sure you have a glass of milk ready.
