Working as a journalist you’re used to covering stories, but reporter Laura Gooderham accidentally became the story after winning a contest she was reporting on.
While covering the Miss Great Grimsby & District 2017 beauty contest for local paper The Grimsby Telegraph Laura, 24, was talked into entering the competition.
Speaking to UNILAD Laura said: “I covered the audition and it all went from there.”
She said while working for the paper one of the judges and three-time Miss Great Grimsby & District 2017 winner, Millie Margetts, approached her and asked her why she wasn’t entering.
After thinking it over for a couple of weeks and speaking to the contest organisers Laura decided to get involved.
She told UNILAD:
I thought that beauty contests were all about pitting women against each other, but after speaking to the organisers and interviewing a lot of the contestants for Grimsby Telegraph I realised it is about raising money for charity and having fun.
So she entered the contest and ended up being crowned Miss Great Grimsby & District 2017 by Millie Margetts, the woman who convinced her to enter.
Millie told The Grimsby Telegraph about the experience of handing the title to someone else:
I’m upset but thrilled for the new girl. She’s going to be doing a lot of charity work and making lots of public appearances. I’m gutted to be losing the crown but excited as well.
Now that she’s won the competition Laura will compete at Miss England in July. But she told us that she has no plans to enter Miss Great Grimsby & District 2017 next year, saying: “Miss England is going to be a lot of work.”
Best of luck to Laura at Miss England, she’s got one hell of a unique story for the judges when she competes.
