To celebrate the occasion we spoke to the great Michael Rooker to talk about Yondu, James Gunn, Avengers: Infinity War and that amazing ‘Guardians’ Inferno’ music video.

But first check out this exclusive behind the scenes clip from the film:

When the first Guardians was released it took everyone by surprise with its fun nature, quickly earning the status of a fan favourite film.

The highly anticipated sequel therefore got a much bigger budget, something that changed things on set as Rooker explains.

He said:

It was a little different as we had more money so our props were as real as possible.

We had real spaceships, well they looked real. They could only be realer by taking off into space.

A lot of the little trickier things would snap off because of the energy of the things, you would be like ‘oh my God I don’t even know my own energy’ and they would come back with superglue. The artistry was amazing!

Playing Yondu must be a lot of fun as he is such a great character, even if he is a tad sleazy we do still love him.

But when we asked Rooker what his favourite thing about playing the infamous blue alien was he had quite a surprising answer.

He told UNILAD:

The make-up was really rewarding and it was a great experience. It was a good time just to prepare and get ready.

I started enjoying my day right at the beginning which set the tone for the rest of the day.

I enjoyed seeing the transition happening through the mirror, that was a very cool aspect of getting ready for Yondu. Once it was on I just forgot it was even on. It was just there.

If you have seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 then you will know that Yondu sadly passes away at the end of the film.

But this is Marvel we are talking about and everyone comes back from the dead right? So we asked Rooker the question everyone wants to know the answer to.

Is Yondu coming back in Avengers: Infinity War?

That is all in the stars. All I know is what you saw is what happened.

My ashes form an arrow and go off into space during the ravager funeral which is pretty cool.

This mysterious answer, the fact he couldn’t tell us exactly what he is working on right now and his post on Instagram wearing an Infinity War hat, is evidence enough to make us believe Yondu is definitely coming back.

The quote that everyone will remember from Guardians is ‘I’m Mary Poppins y’all’, a rather throwaway line that is now emblazoned on hundreds of geeks’ t-shirts across the world.

Although we shouldn’t expect a Yondu cameo in the upcoming Disney film Mary Poppins Returns, Rooker admitted to us that he loves the idea.

He said:

Wouldn’t that be fun.  I had a great time saying ‘I’m Mary Poppins y’all’, it’s such a great line and everything worked out so well.

Even since James Gunn cast Rooker in Slither, the two have been inseparable at work and as friends.

Rooker spoke to us what it is like working with Gunn:

He is a good friend of mine and I knew that he had written the role for me. I was very happy and pleased, he is pretty easy to work with.

He excelled in this environment. He definitely had his work cut out for him but he came through with flying colours and it is beautifully written and directed. And we are still friends!

Because Marvel are Marvel, as an extra treat for fans they made a very special music video for an original song from the soundtrack, Guardians’ Inferno.

It of course comes complete with the standard Stan Lee cameo, some rather funky dance moves and David Hasslehoff singing, or should that be ‘Zardu Hasselfrau’:

It really is the best thing we have seen in years and so of course we asked Rooker how it came about.

He said:

The music video was some sort of crazy nightmare James Gunn had. This is material that definitely comes out of an amazing mind and someone gave him money to do it.

I don’t know how I got talked into doing it but I did and it was a blast. It is ridiculous.

I just got a life-size cardboard cutout of me as the lion. It is pretty amazing. I was reminiscing when I had to wear the lion outfit and it was kind of crazy.

Crazy is the word but it is what Guardians is all about.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is available on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD September 4.
