All are remarkable but we of course would much rather remember the magical moments that made us grin like idiots and want to punch the air with glee.

Here are our favourites!

Darth Vader Returns

LucasFilm

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was undoubtedly one of the best films of 2016 with back-to-back striking scenes, the best of which was the appearance of Darth Vader.

As soon as you hear that heavy breathing you know you’re in for a treat and never before has Vader mercilessly slaughtering rebels with his glowing red lightsaber brought so much joy.

The film is worth seeing for that scene alone!

Leonardo DiCaprio FINALLY Wins An Oscar

It was starting to seem like it would never happen but 2016 was the year that the great DiCaprio won that long-deserved Oscar.

After being nominated five times DiCaprio won Best Actor for his stunning performance in The Revenant.

Sure, it may have brought to an end one of the internet’s greatest memes but we couldn’t be happier for him.

The Twist In Arrival

Paramount Pictures

Denis Villeneuve’s intelligent sci-fi drama was just pure genius thanks to an incredible twist that is one of the most powerful in cinema history.

In a moment that no-one saw coming it’s revealed that the supposed flashbacks are actually flash-forwards. Cue mind being blown.

“Would that it were so simple”

The Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar left many feeling a tad disappointed but all audiences were in complete agreement that this scene was quite simply hilarious.

Watching Ralph Fiennes, channelling Laurence Olivier, attempt to teach Alden Ehrenreich’s young actor Hobie Doyle how to say “would that it were so simple” will have you in stitches even hours after the end credits.

The Avengers Fight In Captain America: Civil War

Civil War was a film made for Marvel fanboys and had many momentous moments to make their year, the best of which was the awesome airport battle.

Twelve superheroes taking to a screen at the same time was either going to be a huge success or a complete flop but thankfully Marvel pulled it off.

Each hero had their moment but it was Ant-Man who stole the show as he became Giant-Man.

The Beastie Boys Save The Federation

In the opening scene of Star Trek we are introduced to a young James T. Kirk as he speeds in a stolen car whilst blasting Beastie Boys’ Sabotage.

It ensured that Kirk made quite the entrance and it was fantastic to hear the rock classic again in Star Trek: Beyond.

As the major battle sequence kicks in the song starts and it fits perfectly ensuring that the action is truly epic.

Moana Becomes The New Elsa

In 2016 Disney released Moana and it really shook things up. Move out of the way Elsa, we have a new heroine in town and she is melting our hearts. Moana is certainly no Disney princess.

Despite “being a girl with an animal side-kick” she emphasises in the film that she is indeed a chieftain’s daughter and it is great to see a Disney heroine with a realistic figure, no romantic interest and some real independence.

She still gets her own power ballad though and How Far I’ll Go is certainly the new Let It Go.
