Erectile dysfunction is a condition which affects one in 10 men in the world.

Its causes are numerous and could range from anything from psychological distress to obesity and diabetes.

Well, if you sadly suffer from this condition, then fear not, because science has an answer, and you’ll definitely have it in your kitchen: coffee.

That’s right, researchers from the University of Texas have found that men who consume around two or three cups of coffee per day found a reduction in risk of around 42 per cent.

Of the 3,724 men who were studied, they were asked about their caffeine consumption as well as whether they suffered from erectile dysfunction.

The study differentiated from coffee, tea and energy drinks and found that participants who had an intake of between 85mg and 170mg per day were 42 per cent less likely to experience erectile dysfunction than those who had no caffeine intake.

Controlling for other factors like weight and blood pressure, the same was still true, which shows that coffee can indeed stimulate that part of your body.

David S Lopez, lead author and assistant professor at UTHealth School of Public Health, said:

Even though we saw a reduction in the prevalence of ED with men who were obese, overweight and hypertensive, that was not true of men with diabetes.

Diabetes is one of the strongest risk factors for ED, so this was not surprising.

According to the report, it is thought that the biological mechanism which caffeine triggers a relaxation of the penile arteries and the smooth muscle which lines the cavernosal spaces. This increases blood flow to your privates and reduced the chance of ED.

In the US, 18.4 per cent of men who are older than 20 suffer from ED, affecting more than 18 million men.

Initially, scientists thought that caffeine acted as a vasoconstrictor, a substance which narrows blood vessels. This reduces the blood flow to the man’s affected member, but we now know the constriction of blood vessels is mild, and only temporary.

Caffeine is in fact a vasodilator, which improves blood flow, and stimulates the central nervous system.

ED isn’t the only condition which could be mitigated thanks to a lovely cup of java. According to a study in the Journal of American College of Cardiology, coffee may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

The authors wrote:

Regardless, a growing body of data suggests that habitual coffee consumption is neutral to beneficial regarding the risks of a variety of adverse CV outcomes including coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, and stroke.

Moreover, large epidemiological studies suggest that regular coffee drinkers have reduced risks of mortality, both CV and all-cause.

The potential benefits also include protection against neurodegenerative diseases and better asthma control.

Before we all start getting our double mocha vanilla frappuccino with extra syrup though, consider that probably isn’t going to be good for your health.
