AMCIt’s been five years since Breaking Bad came to a dramatic end, and 10 years since the first series started. And now I feel very old.
But the good news is, I can ease myself into retirement with a Breaking Bad movie! That’ll definitely take my mind off things…
Sources have revealed the show’s creator, Vince Gilligan, is currently working on a two-hour movie related to the project. It’s not confirmed whether the film will be released to cinemas or made for television, but either way, if it means the return of Jesse Pinkman and Walter White, I’m all in.
Rumours of a Breaking Bad movie have been floating around for some time, largely thanks to the huge success of the show and its spinoff/prequel series Better Call Saul.
Now however, it seems the tantalising prospect is closer than ever, as Gilligan is said to be working on the script, as well as being in line to executive produce and direct.
The project has been given a potential title of Greenbrier, though this could well be just a working title. It’s also yet to be confirmed whether the new film will be a spin-off, a prequel, or a followup to the original series.
Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein, executive producers of prequel series Better Call Saul, are also said to be attached to the upcoming film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
While details are slim, the plot is said to focus on a kidnapped man escaping from his captors, and will focus on his journey to freedom. Production is said to start this month in New Mexico – where Breaking Bad was filmed – after the New Mexico Film Office confirmed a project, titled Greenbrier, is set to begin work in the area.
Nick Maniatis, the New Mexico State Film Office Director, told the Albuquerque Journal:
We are happy to welcome ‘Greenbrier’ and Sony Studios to New Mexico. For years, we’ve built up the film industry in New Mexico and strengthened our film incentives; now, we’re seeing success after success for the film industry in our state.
This will be the first project for Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan since he signed a three-year deal with Sony Pictures Television in July this year, which was seen as a boost for Sony TV as streaming services continue to dominate the small screen.
Breaking Bad ran for five series and won a whole host of Golden Globes, Emmys and BAFTAs, including Best Television series and Best Performance by an Actor for lead actor Bryan Cranston, who played the inimitable Walter White.
