A Netflix documentary series about Ted Bundy is going to be available on the streaming service this month.

After Making A Murderer – which focused on the possible wrongful conviction of Steven Avery – Netflix appeared to clock on to the fact people just love a true crime doc.

Since then, the streaming service has gone on to release gripping series’ such as The Staircase, The Confession Tapes, and The Innocent Man, all drawing us in to the mysteries and controversies surrounding various crimes.

Much to viewers’ delight, Netflix are showing no signs of slowing down with their harrowing yet enticing content for the new year.

The new series, Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, is set to be released on January 24, and focuses on the story of one of the most notorious criminals of the 20th century.

Bundy was a sex offender and murderer, with some believing he was responsible for hundreds of deaths. He confessed to killing a number of people in the 1970s, and while the exact number has been disputed, the BBC report he admitted to 28 murders.

According to The New York TimesBundy was sentenced to death in 1979 following a trial for the murder of two college students. He was also charged for the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl.

He was executed in Florida by electric chair in 1989.

Netflix’s new series will utilise over 100 hours of never-before-heard audio interviews with Bundy, which were recorded while he was on death row in 1980, in an interview with journalists Stephen G. Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth.

The tapes will give viewers a unique insight into the killer’s life, as well as his supposed motives for his crimes, as he tells his story.

The Netflix synopsis reads:

Get a unique look inside the mind of an infamous serial killer with this cinematic self-portrait crafted from statements made by Ted Bundy.

The series will consist of just four episodes, making it perfect for a day of television binging during the dreary January we have ahead.

The show will be released on the 30th anniversary of Bundy’s execution and, as well as the tapes, will focus on his multitude of murders, the media frenzy surrounding his well-publicised trial, and the infamously charismatic way the violent man charmed women.

According to Deadline the series is inspired by a book of the same name, written by the same two journalists who interviewed Bundy.

I can imagine the creators will have to come up with some artistic ways to hold our attention while we listen to the tapes – perhaps they’ll use drawings similar to what we see in Making A Murderer? But I’m sure the series as a whole will be pretty captivating.

Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes comes from Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated director Joe Berlinger, who’s also working on an upcoming film about Bundy, which stars Zac Efron as the notorious criminal.

Hopefully the show will fill the true crime-shaped hole in our lives!
