It was always going to be a tough job putting together the main cast for the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot.
One of the most iconic movies of the eighties, the original Ghostbusters starred some of the most beloved comedic actors of the decade.
Hilarity heavyweights such as Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd don’t come about everyday, and only those with supernatural levels of talent will be able to fill their boiler-suits.
Luckily, it appears ‘Ghostbusters 2020‘ is in very good hands indeed under the diligent direction of Jason Reitman (Juno).
Fresh from saving the universe as part of the Avengers team, Paul Rudd is now intent on rescuing New Yorkers who’ve had their apartments taken over by restless spirits.
Yep. The 50-year-old Ant-Man actor has ‘accepted the call’, with this exciting development announced via the official Ghostbusters Twitter account.
The tweet included a short clip of Rudd admiring the Firehouse, Hook & Ladder building, better known to fans as the ‘Ghostbusters Firehouse’.
Now a popular tourist destination, the firehouse is known to fans as the base from which the spook-hunters conduct their paranormal business.
Addressing the camera, Rudd expresses his excitement about joining the cast, joking, ‘When I heard they were going to call me, well, as you can imagine, I nearly slimed myself’.
Speaking with Variety, director Reitman expressed his delight at working with Rudd:
I’ve been wanting to work with Paul Rudd since my short film opened for ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ at Sundance. I’m thrilled he’ll be joining this new chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe.
This project is important to Reitman on a personal level. His father Ivan Reitman directed the original Ghostbusters, and this latest reboot will be made in his honour.
As reported by ComicBook, Reitman Jr. made the following touching comments about his dad while at Ghostbusters Fan Fest:
You’re the greatest storyteller I know, and I’m the luckiest son on Earth.
I feel so intimidated making this film, but I’m making it for all of you guys. But most of all, I’m making it for you, and I love you.
Sources have reportedly told Variety how Rudd will portray a teacher in the film, but apart from that it’s not yet clear what his role will be in the ghostbusting action.
In terms of plot, everything has been kept pretty hush-hush. However, sources have told Variety the narrative will focus on a single mother and her family.
Who you gonna call? Paul Rudd!
This brand new Ghostbusters movie is expected to be released in cinemas in July 2020.
