Anthony Russo, one half of the Avengers: Endgame directing duo the Russo brothers, has said Loki could still be alive.

In the most recent Marvel film, the determined Avengers spent much of the time working to undo Thanos’ snap, which caused half of the universe to dissolve into dust particles.

The film tied up a lot of loose ends, bringing the Infinity Saga to a satisfying conclusion. But there’s still one question left to be answered; what happened to 2012 Loki?

Of course, Tom Hiddleston’s cunning character was killed in one of the very first scenes of Infinity War, well before Thanos carried out his disastrous plan. But in order to reverse the snap, the remaining Avengers travelled back in time to collect the Infinity Stones before the big purple villain could get his hands on them.

Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man and Ant-Man teamed up and headed to New York City in 2012, where three of the Infinity Stones were all conveniently located, and where Loki was still alive and well.

While also trying to avoid their past selves, the superheroes attempted to steal the Tesseract, which had the Space Stone inside it.

At first, their plan was relatively successful, but it all fell apart when past Hulk was forced to take the stairs. Just when the future Avengers had their hands on the precious stone, a very disgruntled Hulk burst out on the ground floor and wreaked havoc.

In short, Loki ended up with the Space Stone, and he absconded, never to be seen again.

As a result, there could be a separate timeline where Loki is never killed by Thanos.

In an interview with the LA Times, Russo was asked whether the character could have escaped death in the new timeline, to which he responded:

Loki could absolutely still be alive in an alternate timeline.

Although the master of manipulation never reared his head again in Endgame, fans definitely haven’t seen the last of Loki.

According to Den of Geek, the character is among the Marvel heroes getting their own show on the new Disney+ streaming platform, so it’s entirely possible the character in the new TV show will be the same Loki who absconded with the Tesseract into a new timeline.

Speaking to Variety, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained the spin-off TV series will be linked closely to the films, saying:

These episodes will intersect with the movies in a very big way. It’s a totally new form of storytelling that we get to play with and explore.

It will be interesting to see what Loki gets up to in the future! Or will it be in the past? It’s all very complicated.
