Marvel StudiosIf you’ve watched Avengers: Endgame which, let’s be honest, you probably have if you’ve clicked on this article, I wouldn’t blame you for thinking you know everything there is to know about it.
You know who died (RIP), you know it’s overtaken Titanic to become the second highest grossing film of all time, and you know it was epic. Those things you can’t deny.
What you probably didn’t know – until now – is the deleted scene that exists between Thor and Valkyrie, which the directors had to cut at the last minute.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo confirmed there was a scene intended to air towards the end of the film after (spoiler alert) Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, turns over leadership of New Asgard to Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson).
After our favourite superheroes defeat Thanos and bring the fallen Avengers back to life, Thor makes the decision to leave with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Thor also hands over leadership to Valkyrie, telling her:
It’s time to be who I am rather than who I’m supposed to be. But you — you’re a leader. That’s who you are.
Which is all very emotional and moving, particularly because Valkyrie had been struggling with the same alcoholism problems as Thor when they first crossed paths in Thor: Ragnarok.
Marvel StudiosBut hey, we’re not here to talk about things that actually happened in the film – we’re here to talk about the things that could have been. That being a hilariously awkward exchange between Thor and Valkyrie.
Anthony Russo told Entertainment Weekly:
In the ending, we wanted to keep it tight, so we were looking for things to squeeze there. But he had this beat with Valkryie where she puts her arm on his shoulder and he sort of starts to lean in for a kiss. She goes, ‘What are you doing?’
[Thor says] ‘Oh, I thought that touch…’ and she was like, ‘No, that was, like, a goodbye tap I was giving you. It was a really funny beat, but we cut it.
Joe Russo added:
It was really cute. And it was mostly improvised by the two of them, so it was very funny.
What makes the scene even better is that it shows Thor getting awkwardly friendzoned, proving it really can happen to the best of us. Hey, if it can happen to an actual god, I’m pretty sure the rest of us are okay.
Basically, Thor had zero game in the deleted scene and I’m all here for it. Does that make me a bad person?!
