Avengers: Endgame has been the film of 2019 so far, dominating the box office like the cinematic titan we knew it would be.
One year after Avengers: Infinity War proved a colossal hit at the domestic and global box office, Avengers: Endgame arrived to crush previous records like popcorn underfoot.
From enjoying the biggest opening weekend at the box office on record, to becoming the highest-grossing film of 2019, Avengers: Endgame has made success look as simple as snapping your fingers.
And now Avengers: Endgame has just toasted yet enough illustrious milestone, by surpassing Avatar’s original theatrical run.
This herculean achievement was noted by Reddit user Comrade_batman, who stated:
Endgame has now surpassed Avatar’s original theatrical gross (before it was re-released). Endgame only has $38.3 million to surpass Avatar’s final gross now.
Of course, although Avengers: Endgame has left Avatar‘s original theatrical gross in the dust, this does not take into account Avatar’s final gross following its re-release.
As Comrade_batman has pointed out, Avengers: Endgame will need to pull in an extra $38.3 million to officially overtake Avatar‘s final gross.
However, with a re-release on the cards – complete with new footage – it’s still all to play for with these two cinematic giants.
ComicBook.com’s Brandon Davis broke the news about the re-release while speaking with Marvel’s Kevin Feige at a press junket for Spider-Man: Far From Home.
According to ComicBook.com, Feige confirmed the re release, stating:
We are doing that.
I don’t know if it’s been announced. And I don’t know how much… Yeah, we’re doing it next weekend.
Feige revealed this re-release will include some deleted scenes and a tribute to the late, great Stan Lee, as well as some form of post-credits sequence.
Feige told ComicBook.com:
Not an extended cut, but there will be a version going into theaters with a bit of a marketing push with a few new things at the end of the movie.
If you stay and watch the movie, after the credits, there’ll be a deleted scene, a little tribute, and a few surprises. Which will be next weekend.
Of course, we’ve all seen it at least twice by now. However, many fans will no doubt be tempted back into cinemas by this re-release, especially if there’s unseen footage to pore over.
Whether it can beat Avatar‘s final gross remains to be seen, but if any film can do it, Avengers: Endgame can.
Avengers: Endgame will be re-released in cinemas as of June 28.
