After months of waiting, we finally know when Captain Holt, Jake, Amy and the rest of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine gang will return to our screens.

The sixth season of the popular cop comedy will begin on Thursday, January 10 at 9pm on NBC in the slot currently occupied by the Will and Grace revival.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans were devastated earlier this year when Fox announced they were cancelling the show to make room for new programming.

After substantial fan outrage, a number of networks including Netlfix, Hulu and TBS all expressed interest in picking up the show, but all three declined in the end.

Thankfully, the good folk at NBC, who’d first commissioned the show, realised the gang were the perfect fit for their network, and snapped the show up for a 13 episode sixth season.

The Chairman of NBC Entertainment, Robert Greenblatt, told Variety at the time:

Ever since we sold this show to Fox I’ve regretted letting it get away, and it’s high time it came back to its rightful home.

Mike Schur, Dan Goor, and Andy Samberg grew up on NBC and we’re all thrilled that one of the smartest, funniest, and best cast comedies in a long time will take its place in our comedy line-up.

Unfortunately, not all of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine crew are back full time. Chelsea Peretti who plays Holt’s bizarre, morally ambiguous, assistant, Gina Linetti, will no longer appear as a series regular.

Chelsea explained on Twitter how she wasn’t doing a full season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine but added ‘that doesn’t mean I won’t ever be back, winky face emoji, heart emoji’.

She finished by thanking fans for the hours they’d spent watching ‘Gina be Gina’ describing the character as ‘confident, idiotic-but-smart, pithy, and infused with rhythm and cell-phone radiation’.

Sums Gina up really doesn’t it? ‘Sad face emoji’.

To make up for the lack of Gina in our lives, NBC have done everyone a favour and ordered five additional episodes for season six, making the episode total up to 18.

They’ve also put to bed a surprising debate in the UNILAD office, namely, how do you spell the Jakes’ catchphrase ‘toit’?

For a while, the majority believed you spelt it like the word ‘tight’ with a ‘gh’. One editor, however, who we’ll call George because that’s his name, said it was simply ‘toit’.

Well, according to the secret message hidden in the tweet announcing the show’s return date, George is right. It is spelt ‘toit’.

So I feel it’s only right to celebrate for the editor who isn’t in today because it’s the weekend and he’s got better things to do, in the words of Captain Holt: Vindicaaaaaaaaaaaaaatioooooooooooonnnn!!!!!!

Brooklyn Nine-Nine will return in the US on January 10.
