BBC/ITVChris Evans has hit back at critics and nicknamed Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond ‘Zippy, Bungle and George’.
Using his column in the Mail on Sunday, the new Top Gear host threw some proper shade at the former presenters and compared them to the characters from kids TV programme Rainbow.
He said:
Today I will be mostly on my travels again, this time going to Venice with That Car Show. Good title, don’t you think? For a car show. That’s what I would have retitled Top Gear had Zippy, Bungle and George announced some irretrievable divine right over the original name. Either that or Carmageddon, which I’ve always fancied.
BBCHowever, who’s meant to be who in that situation remains a mystery.
Just in case you’ve been living in a cave for the past few months, reports have been implying that the new Top Gear filming isn’t going all too well.
First, there were reports that Evans couldn’t present and drive at the same time (a pretty necessary skill in this situation), had fallouts with BBC bosses and the new co-hosts (all six of them) were heavily mocked over social media.
More recently the crew has been hit with a two week delay for the relaunch, a possible cut in the number of episodes and managed to piss off a load of people after photographs appeared to show filming taking place next to the Cenotaph in central London.
However, Evans, 49, remains unphased by all of this and took time out to also slate his critics.
He continued:
Just a small point here. We don’t actually have a set yet for me to misbehave on. Not only has it not been built, but we have only just signed off the final design. Once it is built, however, I promise I will try not to let the ‘insider’ down.
It will be interesting to see if die-hard fans of Top Gear will stick with the show or follow Clarkson, Hammond and May to Amazon Prime.
