The last few months have seen rumours swirl about Conor McGregor trying his hand at acting in the next season of Game of Thrones.

It made a certain amount of sense, given that fellow athlete Hafþór Björnsson has been holding a role as Cersei’s personal boulder/bodyguard for two years.

But unfortunately for everyone who wanted to see McGregor play someone ‘ard and partake in some eye gouging, it won’t be happening.

When asked about his involvement with the HBO hit, the fighter seemed more surprised than anyone, saying: “That was everywhere and I’ve never even heard about it!”

But while the Irishman firmly denied that he’s taken a role on the critically acclaimed series, he did reveal that he was approached about the possibility months ago.

Speaking to Good Times Network, he said:

I heard about it once after [a fight] … backstage in the dressing room. [UFC brass, including Dana White, were] in front of me and they were saying ‘these [vistors] want you to be in Game of Thrones.

I’m banged up, my shin’s in a heap, I’ve been kicking his knee’s straight for 25 minutes, my leg’s in bits, and he’s trying to offer me a Game of Thrones role.

And I’m saying, ‘Listen, come at me with shit I want to hear, I’m not trying to be in show business, I’m trying to be in the fight business. Come at me with a real number to fight again.’

He continued: “So that was the only time I ever heard the [words] Games of Thrones. And it went everywhere like months later! So I don’t know where that came from.”

Just in case there was any confusion, McGregor asserted: “I’ve never been in contact with nobody from Game of Thrones and now I’m starring in Game of fucking Thrones!”

So to clear that all up: No, McGregor has not been in contact with anyone about a role in Game of Thrones, so he will probably not be starring in it.

Maybe if the show’s creators write in a fighting scene with The Mountain he’ll consider it…
