At 3pm today, Netflix posted a rather mysterious tweet on the Stranger Things account that was just an intriguing photo with no caption.

The image is just a plain white background with a small tear in the corner which looks like it has been torn by a pair of hands.

Of course to many it looked like nothing and left millions of fans puzzled.

However, if you are familiar with the original television adaptation of Stephen King’s popular horror novel It, the image may mean something to you.

Here is the DVD cover for the miniseries:

The cover comprises of a white background with Tim Curry’s terrifying clown Pennywise creeping into the top right hand corner as his hands tear away at it.

The only difference between this and the Stranger Things tweet is that Pennywise is nowhere in sight, although his hands have been tearing at the background in the same corner.

So where is he?

Some fans think that the puzzling tweet means that everyone’s favourite child killer clown is going to be making an appearance in the second series of the hit Netflix show.

It would make sense for Pennywise to make an appearance considering Stranger Things and the recent film adaptation of It are both pop culture classics and follow similar themes.

Both are set in the 1980s, follow a group of kids who are being haunted by a monster, are set in small towns and have supernatural horror themes.

Stranger Things draws a inspiration from Stephen King’s novel and the show wouldn’t even exist if Warner Bros hadn’t turned them down for the directing role of the 2017 remake, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Of course a crossover would be pretty cool but with so many studios involved, it would be difficult to negotiate and may have to remain a fan’s dream.

We will have to wait until the show is released at 8am tomorrow morning (in the UK) to find out what the tweet means and whether Pennywise will be haunting the town of Hawkins, Indiana.

In case you’ve been hiding under a rock the past year, Stranger Things is a love letter to classic supernatural films and TV shows from the 1980s.

Created by the Duffer brothers, the show follows a group of boys who team up with a psychokinetic girl to help find their friend who has mysteriously disappeared.

Set a year after the first series, the second series deals with how the characters are returning to normal life, but of course, things are not as they seem and someone has a chilling secret.

Stranger Things 2 will be available to stream on Netflix October 27.
