If you like Game of Thrones and Ed Sheeran, and you like them together, we have good news.

The show’s producers have confirmed the singer will make an appearance in the seventh series of the show.

David Benioff and DB Weiss confirmed Sheeran’s involvement during an event at the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas on Sunday – and it’s all thanks to Maisie Williams.

Speaking at a panel discussion, Benioff and Weiss said they had been pursuing Sheeran for some time because Williams (Arya Stark) is a big fan.

“For years, we tried to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie, and this year we finally did it,” Benioff said.

It’s not clear what role he’ll have, though cameos before him included Coldplay’s Will Champion as one of Walter Frey’s musicians and Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody as one of the Bolton bannermen.

But Weiss insists playing even the smallest roles can be tough.

He said:

A lot of [music artists] say they would they would like to [be on the show], and then we tell them [shooting a scene] is so boring. ‘You’re gonna hate this — you’re going to be sitting around three days for 12 hours a day.’

The producers noted the lead singer of Icelandic band Sigur Rós, Jónsi Birgisson, wanted to leave after his season three cameo during Joffrey’s ill-fated wedding, not realising he had to stick around as a background actor for several more days.

There’s no confirmation if Sheeran will be performing, like Of Monsters and Men and Sigur Ros did, or if he’ll even be recognisable on screen, but he’ll be there. Somewhere.
