Avengers: Endgame is truly phenomenal, bringing to a close the Infinity Saga, a culmination of 22 films across 11 years.
The incredible journey started with Iron Man, which kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in 2008.
This is where we first met Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark aka. Iron Man, a self-described ‘genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist’.
Starring in a total of nine MCU movies, also making a cameo in The Incredible Hulk, Downey Jr. has remained at the heart of the franchise throughout.
When he first stepped into Stark’s shoes, it became clear Downey Jr. was perfect for the role, but his performance has grown and become more nuanced as his character developed over the years.
In Avengers: Endgame we see sides to Stark/Iron Man we haven’t witnessed before, as he attempts to cope with the devastation caused by Thanos, becomes a dad and addresses the issue of his self-interest.
His portrayal of Stark is heartbreaking, and arguably Downey Jr. gives his best performance as the character in Avengers: Endgame.
Directors the Russo Brothers believe the actor deserves an Oscar for the performance, adding the award will recognise what Downey Jr. has done for the MCU, cinema and pop culture.
As reported by The Washington Post, while promoting Avengers: Endgame in the capital Joe Russo said:
His cumulative body of work from these movies is staggering. If you look at the work over just even the last four [Marvel] films he’s done, it’s phenomenal.
He deserves an Oscar perhaps more than anyone in the last 40 years because of the way that he has motivated popular culture.
He has the world in tears right now.
Currently Heath Ledger is the only actor to have won an Oscar for a superhero film, being awarded Best Supporting Actor posthumously for his role as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
Fans agree with the Russos, with many taking to social media to put their case forward as to why Downey Jr. should win an Oscar.
Robert Downey Jr. has so far received two Oscar nominations in his career. In 1993 he received a Best Actor nod for playing Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin, and a Best Supporting Actor nominaiton in 2009’s Tropic Thunder.
Maybe 2020 will be his year to complete the genre’s Oscars tipping point.
You can watch Avengers: Endgame in cinemas now.
