Warning: Avengers: Infinity War Spoilers
Although it’s been out for over a week now, millions of fans are still reeling at the events of Avengers: Infinity War.
Unlike any other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Infinity War is starkly bleak, leaving audiences stunned into silence as they watch Thanos wipe out half of all life in the universe.
If you thought seeing the likes of Black Panther, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and others turn to ash was upsetting, there was more devastation to come in the end-of-credits scene.
As the screen fades to black we hear the instantly recognisable voice of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, the head of SHIELD.
Chatting to SHIELD agent Maria Hill, played by Cobie Smulders, Fury reveals there’s a search for Tony Stark underway when all of a sudden, a driverless car crashes in front of them.
Of course the driver is missing as Thanos’ purge is underway.
In shock, we then see Hill start to fade away and before he can even finish the word ‘motherf*cker’, Fury suffers the same tragic fate.
However, some hope lies within the sadness, as before he disappears, Fury desperately attempted to contact someone using an old school pager – something straight out of the 1990’s.
As the pager falls to the ground we intensely watch it to see if its message reached the person Fury was trying to contact and thankfully it appears it did.
But who was Fury trying to call?
For any comic book fan the logo which appears on the pager is instantly recognisable.
The star? The stripes? The colour scheme? It isn’t Captain America. No, it’s Captain Marvel.
Oscar-winning actress, Brie Larson, is set to take on the role of Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, in her upcoming solo movie, but it looks like she’ll also be saving the day in the currently untitled Avengers 4.
For a look at what Captain Marvel may look like in the MCU, check out Larson’s Instagram picture:
Captain Marvel, which is being released before Avengers 4, is a prequel set in the 1990’s which makes sense of the pager.
Now, before you ask why hasn’t Fury called her before, this film will probably explain Danvers’ absence from events such as the attack on New York.
If you’re unfamiliar with Captain Marvel, Danvers is an air force pilot whose DNA fuses with Jude Law’s alien hero Marv-Vell giving her the power of flight, super strength, and energy manipulation.
Larson has been training hard for the role as you can see on her Instagram:
According to Marvel chief Kevin Feige, Danvers is the MCU‘s most powerful superhero, telling Variety:
You’re going to get the most powerful superhero that we’ve ever introduced with, I think, one of the most unique and inspiring origin stories.
I honestly can’t wait to see her kick ass!
Avengers: Infinity War is currently out in cinemas worldwide. Captain Marvel will be released in US cinemas March 8, 2019 – there’s currently no UK release date.
