It’s been nearly three years since Detective Chief Inspector John Luther (Idris Elba) last appeared on our television screens.
Undoubtedly one of the nation’s favourite TV detectives, it was recently revealed – much to the delight of fans – the crime drama would be returning, and sooner than we expected.
The BBC confirmed series five will return to BBC One over the coming Christmas period, but that’s not all.
Look who’s back:
Everyone’s favourite femme fatale Alice Morgan, played by Ruth Wilson, is making her return, and if the press release is anything to go by, she’ll be one of the demons from Luther’s past he’ll be forced to confront.
The statement reads:
When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, DCI John Luther played by Idris Elba is once more called to immerse himself in the deepest depths of human depravity.
While the monstrous and seemingly indiscriminate killings become ever more audacious and public, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday played by Wunmi Mosaku are confounded by a complex tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an untouchable corruption.
But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the true face of evil, a reluctant Luther is forced to confront the unburied demons of his own recent past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect and who to sacrifice.
Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him – and change John Luther forever.
Dermot Crowley, Michael Smiley and Patrick Malahide will also be making their return to the show as DSU Martin Schenk, Benny Silver and George Cornelius.
Wunmi Mosaku (End of the F***ing World, Kiri), who won a Bafta for her performance in BBC One’s Damilola, Our Loved Boy in 2017, will play new recruit, DS Catherine Halliday.
While Hermione Norris (Cold Feet, Spooks) will play Dr Vivien Lake, a psychiatrist who cares for some of the most vulnerable in society.
From the moment we met ‘Alice’, fans weren’t sure whether we were supposed to have a soft spot for the murderous research scientist, or just simply fear her.
I mean, she did take pride in slaughtering her parents before stuffing the murder weapon inside the family dog.
Speaking to the Independent earlier this year, Wilson dropped some pretty big hints about her return, stating:
She [Alice] is in it [Luther]. It’s not what you expect. She’s definitely back for a bit. [Alice is] Back with a vengeance.
In January, filming for season five started in London, with pictures emerging of Alice brandishing a gun, so if that’s anything to go by, you know it’s going to be explosive:

Regardless of the plot line, this trailer, set to an atmospheric version of Britney Spears’ hit single, Toxic, is telling me Luther series five could be the best one yet!
What a perfect way to spend cold Christmas evenings – Luther, Alice and left over turkey sandwiches!
