WARNING: The Following Is Ravaged By Blue Fire And Spoilers
Another day, another fan myth for one of the Game of Thrones directors to bust wide open.
In between incest and the just death of Littlefinger, there was the small matter of the Night King and Viserion, who spat a substance which melted a wall – it had stood for thousands of years in a spectacle far greater than any aunt doing the dirty with her nephew.
The winged beast-turned-White-Walker (or would that be White Flyer?) was something of a mystery to us all, and no one could predict what the Ice Dragon would have in his arsenal.
When Viserion shot his impressive and inexplicable blue flame from his undead jaws, the theorists assembled and started batting around their wild ideas.
So, here’s Jeremy Podeswa, director of The Dragon and the Wolf, dropping some truths over at The Huffington Post:
The way I looked at it was, when the Sept burned down [in the season six finale], that was green fire, and so then the dragon is going to have some kind of blueish fire.
It’s certainly still fire — it has the ability to burn the Wall and melt snow but it’s going to have a different kind of magical quality to it, because it’s coming from an undead dragon.
For all the bookish traditionalists out there, you’ll be pleased to know this ties in with George R. R. Martin’s take on Viserion.
He described them as ‘colossal beasts, many times larger than the dragons of Valyria’ which, ‘are said to be made of living ice, with eyes of pale blue crystal and vast translucent wings through which the moon and stars can be glimpsed as they wheel across the sky.’
In contrast to common dragons, who breathe flame, ‘ice dragons supposedly breathe cold, a chill so terrible that it can freeze a man solid in half a heartbeat’.

It explains why Tormund looked like he’d shit himself, then – can hardly blame the guy, coming up against the Night King and his winged companion.
We’ll just have to wait and see how much havoc the White Walkers wreak over Westeross in 2019.
