The director of Game of Thrones has stepped forward to defend Ed Sheeran after the singer made a widely ridiculed cameo in the fantasy show’s first episode.

Sheeran made an Extras-style cameo in Monday’s episode,’Dragonstone’, which has been mocked by fans who believe the singer’s inclusion was misjudged and may have forced poor Ed to delete his Twitter.

Despite all the criticism though, it seems Sheeran has one defender at least in Jeremy Podeswa, the director of the first episode.

Podeswa told Newsweek

He came into this with only lovely intentions to come and do a good job and sing well, so I think that’s the only drag, if people didn’t know who Ed was, they wouldn’t have thought about it twice.

The hoo-ha seems to be from things that are outside of the world of the show. In the world of the show, he did a lovely job, and he looks like he belongs in that world.

The negative reaction took Podeswa by surprise who claims he knew Ed was a very well known and successful singer but he didn’t anticipate the weight of expectation that would bring with it.

He explained he thought fans were bringing so much of his superstar presence into the show which distracted them from the episode.

Sheeran’s appearance was first revealed by showrunner David Benioff who claimed it was meant as a gift for star Maisie Williams.

Of course, those irked by Sheeran’s appearance can console themselves by pretending that Ed’s playing Symon Silver Tongue, a character who eventually ends up being cannibalised…
