The trailer for Game of Thrones season eight has landed, with a satisfyingly thunderous, Earth shaking roar of fire.
After a long winter of speculation and vague rumors, we’re finally getting a little peek over the Wall into the tempestuous world which awaits us in April.
It’s sorely tempting to spend time carefully re-watching the trailer for traces of the final motivations and developments which will push our characters to the end game.
But there’s one scene in particular which is capturing the imagination of fans, with one very important character appearing to finally connect with his secret lineage…
In the scene, oblivious Targaryen Jon Snow can be seen striding towards the two dragons which haven’t yet been warped into hideous ice monsters.
The newly crowned King of the North is of course accompanied by his auntie/lover/extremely dubious rebound Daenerys Targaryen, but let’s not cross over into that icky territory for now.
Anyhoo, many viewers – myself included – are of the firm belief the former Bastard of Winterfell is all set to ride a dragon this season, L plates off and ready to roll.
This is of course the last ever season and it’d be deeply frustrating to see the story end without Jon embracing the dragon whispering powers which flow in his Targaryen blood.
We have of course seen Jon hitching a ride with Dany on a dragon, but this just wasn’t enough. We need to see him claim his true identity and take control of his destiny, dammit.
The question remains, could Jon be set to ride into battle on a dragon, or will he just be taking it for a spin around the block?
Season 8 of Game of Thrones will air in the US on HBO on April 14, and Sky Atlantic early morning April 15 in the UK.
