I do get some of the backlash against season eight of Game of Thrones, I really do.
I personally think a couple more seasons would have helped steer the storyline more effectively, and would ensure that certain explosive moments felt less rushed.
The characters and the dialogue – so poetic in the first few seasons – were always more important than the shock and gore. The escalated action as we hurtle towards the end feels more expedient than satisfying.
However, there is no denying that Game of Thrones is still an exceptional – and extremely watchable – show, flying wings and tail above other prestige dramas of its ilk.
It may lack the slow exposition and philosophical musings of years gone by, but I for one am still utterly gripped by the drama of it all, stray coffee cups and all.
Indeed, there are many excellent qualities to the cinematic, post-literary Westeros, which brings heart-stopping thrills at every turn. It is undoubtedly great television, even if the years of committed fandom haven’t quite paid off.
With any beloved TV series – or indeed any aspect of life – you have to accept that nothing will ever quite live up to the anticipation. However, some fans have chosen to take matters into their own hands, starting a petition to have season eight remade ‘with competent writers’.
This change.org petition – which has gained over 16,000 signatures at the time of writing – was created by a fan by the name of Dylan D., who has made the following demands:
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on.
This series deserves a final season that makes sense.
Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!
Now, describing David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as ‘woefully incompetent writers’ is a tad unfair. Indeed, holding the pen to George RR Martin’s epic, unfinished story is a huge responsibility for any writer and a task they have shown great flair for.
However, plenty of infuriated fans have signed their names to this cause, with some describing this latest season as a ‘punch in the gut’.
One campaigner declared:
Because the Game of Thrones deserves a farewell better than what D&D are giving right now.
It needs a hell lotta better content to be remembered as a legacy for the years to come.
Another said:
I feel that they tried too fit to much material in too few episodes. What we have seen in the last 7 seasons does not match this season at all.
Even if HBO had a few million quid handy to rip up this season’s script and start from scratch, I doubt they could ever please everybody.
You can now watch the new season of Game of Thrones on HBO or Sky Atlantic.
