Bad news for every single person who has been waiting for the arrival of the eighth and final season of Game Of Thrones, it may be delayed.
It was recently reported season eight would premiere in the ‘first half’ of 2019.
Most series so far have aired between March and April so you’d think it’d be safe to presume season eight will also air around then. Then again, this is GoT, so you never know.
In a new interview, a member of the GoT production team may have burst the bubble of anyone hoping the entire final season would air by the end of May 2019.
Talking to the Huffington Post on the show’s eligibility for the 2020 Emmy Awards, visual effects supervisor Joe Bauer said:
In two years we’ll be eligible for the season eight work, which we’re just beginning now.
We’re going to be toiling away on season eight until May of 2019, so it’s eight or nine months away.
But the prequel is starting to shoot in February, at least the pilot. So we’ll still have quite a lot to do on season eight when they’re beginning.
To qualify for the 2019 Emmy Awards the show’s six episode finale would need to air in its entirety by May 31, however, it would logically follow if they’re aiming for the 2020 awards, we won’t be seeing many (if any) episodes prior to that date.
Well there’s always the prequel to soften the blow. For those already mourning the end of one of the most critically-acclaimed television series ever, fear not – the project is already in the works.
According to George R.R. Martin himself, the prequel is going to be even darker than the original.
Details on which lore of Westeros will be dramatised has remained under wraps. Thankfully though, Martin has given fans a small idea of what they can expect.
In a recent blog post, he wrote:
Yes, this is a prequel, not a sequel. None of the characters or actors from GAME OF THRONES will appear in the new show. All of the successor shows we’ve been developing have been prequels, as I have mentioned before.
This one really puts the PRE in prequel, since it is set not ninety years before GAME OF THRONES (like Dunk & Egg), or a few hundred years, but rather ten thousand years (well, assuming the oral histories of the First Men are accurate, but there are maesters at the Citadel who insist it has only been half that long).
We’re very early in the process, of course, with the pilot order just in, so we don’t have a director yet, or a cast, or a location, or even a title. (My vote would be THE LONG NIGHT, which says it all, but I’d be surprised if that’s where we end up. More likely HBO will want to work the phrase “game of thrones” in there somewhere. We’ll know sooner or later).
Result! So sure, the last season of Game of Thrones may be pushed back a month or so, but let’s face it, the longer the wait the better…You know what I mean? Plus once it’s gone you’d have wished it’d been delayed by two years.
