Game of Thrones will soon be coming to an end, but there’s still a lot in store for fans as George R.R. Martin has confirmed three spinoffs are in the works.
After eight long years, an abundance of sex scenes, multiple battles and endless, complicated family trees, the much-loved HBO original show has just two episodes left.
The final season has already presented the biggest battle in TV history, but there’s still more to come as the determined characters set out to take on Cersei and win the Iron Throne.
Although the conclusion of the show is sure to leave a big Throne-shaped hole in many fans’ lives, the man who created the stories is coming to the rescue.
Martin, the author of the books which the series is based on, shared an update with fans on his personal blog, explaining there was no shortage of spin-off ideas – or ‘successor shows’, as he likes to call them.
While he remained vague about the plot of the shows, he revealed one of the spinoffs is actually set to begin production later this year.
He wrote:
We have had five different GAME OF THRONES successor shows in development (I mislike the term “spinoffs”) at HBO, and three of them are still moving forward nicely.
The one I am not supposed to call THE LONG NIGHT will be shooting later this year, and two other shows remain in the script stage, but are edging closer.
What are they about? I cannot say. But maybe some of you should pick up a copy of FIRE & BLOOD and come up with your own theories.
In a 2017 interview with Entertainment Weekly, programming president Casey Bloys explained that while multiple spinoff options might be in the works, that doesn’t necessarily mean there will be more than one new show.
Instead, the the plan is to develop several options and hope one of them lives up to the original Game of Thrones series.
Bloys said:
In the press at large, everybody said, ‘there are four spinoffs’ and they assume that means each one is happening and we’re going to have a new Game of Thrones show per quarter.
That’s not what’s going on. The idea is not to do four shows. The bar set by [GoT showrunners, Benioff and Weiss] is so high that my hope is to get one show that lives up to it.
Hopefully the creators will come up with an epic successor to keep Game of Thrones fans busy once the show comes to an end. The series will certainly be missed!
