PA/HBOKnowing your own worth can get you places in life, which is exactly what Gwendoline Christie just proved by submitting herself for an Emmy and getting nominated.
It comes as no surprise Game of Thrones’ final season has broken records by earning the most Emmy nominations for a single show in one year, but what’s most unusual is the fact many of the show’s actors who found themselves nominated weren’t even submitted for consideration by HBO.
One of which is Gwendoline Christie, who became a firm favourite on the show as Ser Brienne of Tarth since her arrival in season two. On Wednesday, Christie was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, but she didn’t sit and wait around for someone else to point out her worth.
HBOWith a cast of that size, HBO couldn’t nominate all of its actors, so Christie took it upon herself to throw her own name in the mix, proving there’s rewards to be had when you be your own biggest cheerleader, and that’s the exact energy we all need to live by.
Season eight give Brienne some of her most emotionally hitting scenes ever, including receiving a knighthood despite the position’s gender restrictions, finally acting on her long-standing feelings for Jaime Lannister and then breaking down when he instead chose to leave her for his own twin sister.
HBOGwendoline wasn’t the only cast member to not be submitted for Emmy consideration by HBO. Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy) is up for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and Carice van Houten (Melisandre) for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series after self-submitting.
Christie is nominated alongside three more Game of Thrones co-stars, Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), marking the first time ever four actors for the same drama have been up against one another in the same category.
Anyone else reckon Gwendoline deserves to win on the grounds she was ballsy enough to know she deserved the nomination in the first place? Well played.
