It’s official, we don’t have much time left in the Game of Thrones realm.

It’s long been rumoured that the show will end with season 8, with showrunners D.D. Weiss and David Benioff suggesting that there may only be two more seasons in the works, with season 7 and 8 both having less episodes than usual.

But now HBO have confirmed that it’s definitely ending after the next two seasons.

According to The Mirror, HBO programming president Casey Bloys revealed the news at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour.

The Hollywood Reporter quoted him as saying:

Yes, I think [the showrunners, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff] have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do.

If I could get them to do more, I would take 10 seasons but we want to take their lead with what they could do and what the best version of the show is.

Bloys also confirmed that season 7 will have seven episodes, but that no decision had been made at this point on how long season 8 will be.

We’ve talked about it. It’s not something I’m opposed to but it has to make sense creatively. I’m not sure the guys can wrap their heads around it when they are about to start production. We’re open to it; the guys aren’t opposed to it but there’s no concrete plans right now.

This means that we’ll be saying goodbye to Westeros some time in 2018.

And with the arrival of winter, and the Stark’s words finally making good on their promise, the new episodes will take a little longer to hit our screens, as production is delayed so they can wait for the cold weather.

Benioff and Weiss told the UFC Unfiltered podcast earlier in the month that they’re getting ready to shoot some absolutely spectacular scenes, and that they’re making the show even more authentic.
