Friends is an eternal cycle of humour – especially if you’re an avid watcher of Comedy Central which seems to air the episodes religiously for weeks on end.
And despite ending over 10 years ago, Friends viewers and fanatics are still just as prevalent in the world as they were when it was first broadcast.
However, did you know that one of the TV show’s most loveable couples who separated in the show were actually supposed to stay together – don’t worry, I’m talking about Phoebe and David, not Joey and Rachel.
When David (Hank Azaria) decided to leave Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) behind to focus on his career by moving to Minsk, Phoebe ended up meeting Mike (Paul Rudd), who she later married on the show.
It was heartbreaking for the masses as they waved goodbye to the science-loving geek David, but nothing more – that is, until now.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, Hank Azaria revealed that he was supposed to end up with Phoebe eventually but Paul Rudd was simply too lovable to write out.
Speaking to the Huffington Post, Azaria said:
I think, honestly, what happened was Paul Rudd is so awesome that they sort of found a groove with him and [my character] became more of just the grist for that mill. As opposed to the other way around.
He’s a handsome devil. He’s actually annoyingly handsome. He shouldn’t really be allowed to be that handsome. He’s like the Tom Brady of comedy.
And yes, even Azaria was sad that he didn’t get together with Phoebe:
It actually did sting a little bit. Whatever part of me is David the science guy who went to Minsk, which admittedly is probably a small part of me but that part of me wanted to end up with Phoebe. So I was sort of sad when I didn’t.
Ah well, at least things were supposed to be perfect. Bloody Paul Rudd, coming here, taking our original plots…
