Warning: This Article Contains Major Spoilers!
The season 7 finale of Game Of Thrones confirmed one of the biggest mysteries plaguing us since we first all arrived in Westeros.
This year’s fantasy fix has come to a close, and despite its short run it’s fair to say we’ve enjoyed it (mostly) and are now left wanting the eighth, and final, season to air right now. Particularly with the revelation that finally confirms Jon Snow’s true parentage and his ‘real’ name.
In ‘The Dragon and the Wolf’ Samwell Tarley makes it to Winterfell and has a reunion with Bran Stark – who as we all know is The Three-Eyed Raven.
Their conversation soon turns to Jon, where Bran tells Sam that he isn’t the son of Ned Stark but Ned’s sister Lyanna and Rhaegar Targaryen. Sam reveals what he learnt (or rather what Gilly told him) while he was studying with the maesters of Oldtown – that Rhaegar annulled his first marriage and wedded Lyanna shortly afterwards.
Furthermore we find out Jon’s name isn’t even ‘Jon’, it’s Aegeon, a name which bares so much significance, even for those who don’t read the books.
The name Aegeon belonged to the first Targaryen King that came to Westeros centuries before the current timeline, who brought the seven kingdoms under his rule, along with his sister-wives (yes you read that right) and their three dragons.
Therefore Jon takes the namesake of the greatest Targaryen of them all, making his official title Aegon VI. Also, as his father was the official heir to the throne it means by right Jon Snow is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.
If any of you read the books, the title of the series A Song Of Ice and Fire truly makes sense now.
We find all of this out as we cut to a montage of Jon and Daenerys finally spending the night together. Pretty sure half the people watching we’re thinking ‘Yay, finally’, the other half were thinking ‘No gross, someone tell Bran to send a raven, let him know he’s having relations with his aunt!’.
So how will this new revelation effect Jon, Dany and the entire kingdom of Westeros? Looks like we’ll have to wait till season 8 to find out. Which won’t be until 2019 unfortunately.
