The upcoming sixth season of How To Get Away With Murder will be its last, ABC announced today.
The show, which stars Viola Davis as Annalise Keating, launched in 2014 and has since amassed a loyal and dedicated following.
Davis later won an Emmy for her portrayal of Keating, becoming the first woman of colour to win the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series award.
Check out the trailer for the final season below:
The series follows Keating, a professor of defence law, as she teaches a class called How to Get Away with Murder at a Philadelphia law school.
The professor chooses five of her best and brightest students to assist her with cases at her firm alongside her employees, Frank Delfino (Charlie Weber) and Bonnie Winterbottom (Liza Weil).
However, it doesn’t take long for the group to become trapped in a murder mystery of their own – testing everyone’s limits and revealing dark truths along the way.
The series also stars Billy Brown, Jack Falahee, Rome Flynn, Aja Naomi King, Matt McGorry, Conrad Ricamora, and Amirah Vann.
Series creator Pete Nowalk said in a statement, as per E! News:
Deciding to end this series was a brutal decision, but ultimately the story tells you what to do – as it did here.
For me, Annalise Keating’s journey has always had a clear ending. Knowing I have 15 episodes left to finish her story, and the chance to give all the characters their own killer endings, is a gift rarely given to a series creator and I’m grateful to ABC and ABC Studios for the opportunity and creative freedom.
I am so thankful to the brilliant cast, writers and crew for dedicating themselves to the most rewarding experience of my career over the last six years. I also want to thank our fans. The only reason this show exists is because of your loyalty and enthusiasm.
I can’t wait for you all to see how it ends, with twists and turns and all the craziness we love to create every Thursday night. Buckle up.
The news of the Shondaland-produced show ending comes just one day after it was revealed the first series under Shonda Rhimes’ huge Netflix deal will debut in 2020, Variety reports.
Rhimes left ABC for Netflix last year, after working at the studio for more than a decade. Two other ABC-Shondaland collaborations, Scandal and For the People, ended their runs last year.
However, the producer will still have ties with the network for at least another year, due to ABC handing out a two-season renewal to Grey’s Anatomy in May.
The final season of How to Get Away with Murder begins Thursday, September 26 on ABC.
