Hugh Jackman’s swan song playing Wolverine has only just hit cinemas, but the actor is already discussing the possibility of a return.

After 17 years playing the Marvel mutant, culminating in the violently emotional Logan, Hugh Jackman has confirmed it’s time to hang up the knuckle blades and put down the cigars.

But it need not have been this way. On the promo tour for Logan, Jackman said he would’ve reconsidered his decision if Wolverine had been able to appear in The Avengers franchise as part of the Marvel cinematic universe.

Speaking to a Screen Rant Wolverine super fan, Jackman said:

If that was on the table when I made my decision, it certainly would have made me pause, that’s for sure.

I always loved the idea of him within that dynamic, with the Hulk – obviously – and with Iron Man but there’s a lot of smarter people with MBAs who can’t figure that out…

You never know. At the moment, honestly, if I really did have them there, I probably wouldn’t have said this is the last. It just feels like this is the right time [to leave the character].

So, as it turns out the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot was not only a plague on our senses, but also the reason we will never get to see Jackman and Robert Downey Jr. share a screen with Wolverine and Iron Man fighting on the same team.

But alas, the established Marvel Cinematic Universe is blocked from using many of the characters and stories from the comics and 20th Century Fox never worked out a crossover deal with Marvel Entertainment.

The Avengers: Infinity War is set for release on May 4 2018. Meanwhile, Logan is coming to a cinema near you on March 3 2017.
